"BlackBerry" Presiden Amerika Serikat Barak Obama ternyata harganya mencapai US$ 3.350 (sekitar Rp 36,8 juta). Ponsel ini mahal harganya karena Gedung Putih memakai pengaman khusus. Gedung Putih memang tak mengizinkan Obama memakai BlackBerry biasa. Ponsel ini memiliki pengamanan atau enkripsi khusus, sehingga tak mudah untuk dibobol.
"Kalau menggunakan BlackBerry biasa, posisi presiden bisa diketahui musuh, karena pada BlackBerry dilengkapi dengan peranti GPS. Bila ponsel ini dibobol dari jarak jauh, posisi Presiden juga ketinggian lokasinya bisa bocor," kata seorang petugas keamanan dalam wawacara dengan CNBC.
Ponsel khusus ini disebut "BarackBerry". Seperti ditulis blogger Marc Ambinder untuk majalah The Atlantic, ponsel ini punya pengaman khusus untuk percakapan via telepon maupun pengimin dokumen.
Sistem pengaman "BarackBerry" ini memakai teknologi Sectera Edge keluaran General Dynamics. Sectera Edge adalah kependekan dari Secure Mobile Environment Portable Electronic Device.
Sistem pengaman seperti itu juga telah dibuat oleh pemerintah Indonesia . Sistem itu dikembangkan oleh polisi bekerja sama dengan Badan Pengkajian dan Penerapan Teknologi. Ponsel yang tak bisa disadap harganya Rp 100 juta.
Obama yang merupakan salah satu dari BlackBerry's addict tetap ingin menggunakan BlackBerry'nya untuk piranti komunikasinya. Namun Staf Gedung Putih melarang Obama menggunakan BlackBerry'nya karena alasan keamanan. Untuk itu Obama dihadiahi "BarackBerry" atau Sectera Edge (nama resminya) merupakan produk pengembangan dari General Dynamics yang merupakan perusahaan penyedia sistem pertahanan dan layanan untuk Amerika Serikat. Jadi ponsel ini bukan buatan BlackBerry. Nama "BarackBerry" diambil sebagai plesetan dari BlackBerry yang merupakan ponsel favorit Obama..
